Granulated sugar: Like any recipe, balance is key. Sugar provides a bit of sweetness to balance the alcohol. You can use variations such as agave, maple syrup, turbinado sugar, or simple syrup. I just don’t suggest honey, as it’s difficult to dissolve. Angostura bitters: You can find this in most grocery stores. To mix up the taste, try using black walnut bitters or orange bitters. Whiskey: You can use any type in an old fashioned recipe – I reach for the bourbon but enjoy rye, too. Orange peel: Adds a citrus note – a staple of classic old fashioned recipes. Luxardo cherries: These are basically fancy maraschino cherries. You can use regular maraschino cherries if you like those instead.
For that reason, you’ll want to get whatever bottle you enjoy that is within your budget. I personally enjoy bourbon, and find myself opting for Bulleit, but Four Roses is another popular choice. You can also use rye, or, if you want a bolder cocktail, go for a high-proof whiskey. If in doubt, you can always ask the staff at your local liquor store. Fizzy old fashioned: To make it less spirit-forward, you can top it off with club soda – the bubbles add some fun! Spirit swap: A Wisconsin old fashioned uses brandy instead of whiskey, and tops it off with club soda. Other spirits you can use include rum, tequila, or gin. Maple old fashioned: Substitute the sugar cube with maple syrup for a warm, rich sweetness that pairs beautifully with bourbon. Fall old fashioned: When the weather gets cooler, I like to add a dash of cider and little sprinkle of cinnamon. Fruity old fashioned: Muddle some fruit in with your sugar water and bitters before adding the whiskey – this works well with anything from peach slices to berries! A dash of fruit juice, like pineapple juice or passionfruit syrup, can add new notes. Vanilla: Pour a little splash of vanilla into your shaker. The flavor works beautifully with whiskey!
