What’s better than a crisp margarita on a hot day? A crisp and frosty margarita slushy on a hot day! As you can probably tell from the amount of margarita recipes on my blog, margarita cocktails are serious business around here. So, when creating my frozen margarita recipe, my goal was to find the perfect balance of sweet, tart, crisp, and salty flavors and then make it frosty and refreshing. I’ll explain how it’s done, how to find the perfect flavor, what tequila to use, fun variations, and more tips!
How to make frozen margaritas
If you’ve wondered ‘how to make a frozen margarita,’ you’re in luck! You don’t even need a frozen margarita machine to whizz this one up. First, gather a handful of ingredients and your blender. Next, rim your glass. Easy! Then pour all the liquid ingredients and the ice into a blender and give it a good whizz. Then simply pour your frozen margaritas into your glasses, and add a lime to garnish. Cheers!
Which tequila to use for margaritas
Tequila comes in three primary varieties: For this recipe, I like to use blanco (silver) tequila because of its mild flavor. If you prefer a stronger tequila flavor, grab some reposado (gold) tequila instead. Ultimately, the best tequila to use will be one that you enjoy.
Fun ways to rim your glass
If we were to stick to tradition, a salt rim classic choice. But hey, you’ve got options! Changing up the rim is a simple way to alter the taste when crafting your frozen margarita recipe. Here are some of my favorites: Then, hold your glass upside down and press the dampened rim into the saucer of salt. Twisting the glass back and forth slightly can help with coating it in the salt. Lift the glass from the saucer, tapping away any excess salt.
Salt rim: Salt enhances the flavors in cocktails and offsets the sweetness. Kosher salt works well. You may come across “margarita salt” for sale, but I prefer to spend those dollars on a tequila I enjoy rather than a special salt since kosher works just fine. Sugar: If you have a sweet tooth, you can always rim your glass with brown sugar for added sweetness. Or make a mix of salt and sugar. Spicy: Choose tajin for a spicy kick – it’s delicious with the lime! Citrus zest: To add a burst of vibrancy, you can also sprinkle some lime zest over the salt before you rim your glass. Coconut: For a tropical flair, use shredded coconut.
Ratios for a frozen margarita recipe
The ratios for a frozen margarita are easy: 1 part agave, 2 parts triple sec, 2 parts lime juice, and 4 parts tequila. All you need to do is rim the glass and add the ice, and you’ll be sipping on a refreshingly tart and citrusy margarita slushy before you know it.
Too sweet: If it’s a bit too sweet for you, add a squeeze of lime juice and a pinch of kosher salt. Too tart: Balance out the tartness with a touch more agave syrup. Too much tequila: If the alcohol flavor is too strong, add more ice, lime juice, and agave too dilute the alcohol. Not enough tequila: You know what to do! Add some more tequila, slowly, as you can always add more. Too salty: If the rim is too salty for you, try a sugar rim or some tajin if you don’t mind spiciness.
Get fruity: Frozen pineapple margarita, frozen strawberry margarita… There are so many delicious margarita varieties you can make by adding frozen fruit! Instead of all the ice, use 4 cups of ice and 2 cups of frozen fruit. Try this trick with strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, mango, raspberries, or watermelon. Spicy frozen margarita: Add a few jalapeño slices to the blender for a spicy version, and rim the glass with tajin. Smoky frozen margarita: Use mezcal in place of the tequila for some subtle smokiness. I love this with a tajin rim, too! Juicy margaritas: Another way to incorporate fruity flavors is to freeze fruit juice in ice cube trays. Add two cups of the fruity ice, and 4 cups of regular ice. This keeps the crushed ice consistency flavor to that of a slushy! I like doing this with orange juice, peach juice, or even hibiscus tea or cream of coconut. Lychee: Add some lychee for a subtle sweet and floral note.
