Just when you thought sunny gatherings couldn’t get any better … get ready to fall in love with the slushy version of everyone’s favorite summer cocktail! A classic Aperol spritz recipe is crisp, light, and bittersweet – and this version is all of that, yet even more refreshing!I first dreamt up this frozen Aperol spritz recipe after we experienced a heat dome here in British Columbia a few years ago, around the same time I created this frozen Negroni slushy recipe – yeah, it was a scorching summer that year, so I was blending anything I could with ice.
How to make a frozen Aperol spritz
You’re going to love how easy this Aperol slushie is! Are you ready? Pop everything into your blender, push that button until the mixture is smooth and slushy, then pour into glasses. Garnish with your orange slices, and top it off with a little extra prosecco for some bonus fizz. Salute! This is what you need for a frozen Aperol spritz:
Aperol: This apéritif is an Italian classic, known for it’s refreshing and crisp flavor. You’ll find it in most liquor stores, usually in the ‘other liqueurs’ section. Prosecco: The fizz and sweetness of the prosecco is divine, even in this frozen version. (Note: You can swap the prosecco out for tonic water if you want to reduce the alcohol content.) Orange juice: Adding orange juice to your frozen Aperol spritz helps the consistency become smooth and slushy, and adds an extra dash of citrusy goodness. This also adds natural sweetness, so this Aperol slushy version is slightly less bitter. Orange slices: Garnish these babies with an orange slice, because cocktails taste better when they’re pretty. Ice cubes: No explanation needed, open up that freezer and get out them cubes! High-speed blender: And finally, a high-speed blender gives this frozen cocktail it’s slushy consistency. Is it happy hour yet?
Juice swap: An easy way to experiment with the flavor is to change out the juice. This also works if you have a different fruit juice in the fridge you want to use up. I’ve made this with mango juice before, and I loved my frozen Aperol spritz mango style. Peach juice or pineapple juice would also be delicious. Frozen mangos: Speaking of mango, adding frozen mangos to the blender makes for a delicious smooth consistency. Lower alcohol: For a version that’s lighter on the alcohol, swap the prosecco out for tonic water. No alcohol: I’ve experimented with no-alcohol spirits and (to be completely honest) most are terrible. But one I’ve really enjoyed, and is a good substitute for Aperol, is Wilfred’s. Garnish: The classic cocktail version is garnished with green olives in Italy, but in North America, you’ll commonly find this Italian aperitif garnished with an orange slice. Mix it up, and add some mint leaves or berries.
