Homemade Banana Milk
Having grown up in South Korea, I have many fond memories revolving around one of the most iconic drinks – banana uyu (means milk in Korean). First introduced in 1974 by a well-known food and beverage company, Binggrae, Korean banana milk is still going strong today. It’s one of those nostalgic foods that I still purchase from time to time at a local Korean grocery store and every time I go to Korea to visit my family. However, I also know now that it’s made with a ton of added sugar, preservatives, and additives. So here’s my easy and healthy banana milk recipe! You can even pour this flavored milk to make baked oatmeal, like this strawberry baked oatmeal.
Ingredients
Banana – use a ripe banana for best resultsMilk – Whole milk is most recommended, but if dairy-free, there are so many great non-dairy milks to choose from. Almond milk or cashew milk will work well or soy milk, oat milk, or coconut milk if needing a nut-free optionHemp seeds – This is optional but such an easy way to boost healthy fat, fiber, and protein.Pure vanilla extract. You can also add a dash of cinnamon.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. That’s it! Enjoy immediately!
Tips for Success
Control how sweet you want the milk to be – the more ripe the banana is, the sweeter the milk will be. You can also taste and add maple syrup or date syrup if you don’t want it to be too banana-y.If you are desiring a banana smoothie, substitute water with milk and blend with several ice cubes to help thicken. This milk is best served cold. You can either use frozen banana, which is what I like to do, or ice cold water and milk. You can also add some ice cubes after blending.
Equipment
While you can use any food blender to make this banana milk, you do need a high-powered blender if you’re planning to use a frozen banana. I’ve had my Vitamix for 7+ years and it’s worth every penny! I use it to make all my blender muffins, dips/sauces, smoothies, veggie nuggets, pancakes…it’s hands down my number one workhorse.
Serving Suggestions
You can certainly drink the banana milk as is. Or if you want to invite more fun and variety into your child’s meals, here are some suggestions:
Pour over dry cereal (here are my top favorite store-bought cereals)Add to oatmealMix with lentils
Storage
It is best to drink as soon as it’s blended. Otherwise, you will notice the inevitable separation and discoloration. You can refrigerate for 1-2 days.Just make sure to give it a good shake!
