We love smoothies because they’re so easy to make and they pack a nutritional punch. They’re great for getting nutrients into both kids and grown-ups, and they keep us feeling full without weighing us down. We use yogurt in this smoothie but you can easily swap it for dairy-free yogurt. You can also add a bit of honey or maple syrup to make it as sweet as you like. Pour it into a glass or serve as a smoothie bowl with some granola, shredded coconut, and fresh fruit for a healthy breakfast or snack.

How to make a blackberry smoothie

This blackberry banana smoothie is what we make when blackberries are abundant and in season. It’s great as a healthy breakfast or snack on the go, and it’s super easy to make. Let’s make one! You only need five simple ingredients to make this refreshing blackberry banana smoothie recipe. Here’s what you need:

Frozen blackberries – frozen blackberries give this smoothie a richer thicker texture than fresh blackberries. Banana – banana adds natural sweetness and creaminess. The riper the banana, the sweeter it is! You can also use a frozen banana. Yogurt – we usually go for Greek yogurt because it’s thicker and higher in protein, but any yogurt will work. You can also use dairy-free yogurt if needed. We find coconut yogurt tastes especially good alongside the blackberries and bananas. Water – water helps to thin out this smoothie to a drinkable consistency. You can also use milk or a non-dairy milk alternative like coconut milk or unsweetened almond milk for more creaminess. Honey or maple syrup – if you like a sweeter smoothie, a bit of honey or maple syrup will do the trick. If not, feel free to skip it.

A scoop of your favorite protein powder will give this smoothie a major protein boost. Ground flaxseeds and hemp seeds are high in omega 3 fatty acids, plus they’re a great source of fiber. Add a tablespoon or two for your daily dose! Any nut butter will add creaminess and some healthy fat which will help you feel fuller longer. You can use almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, or even pumpkin seed butter. A handful of spinach or kale (or other leafy green) will help you get your daily dose of greens. It will alter the bright purple color, but you won’t taste it at all!

We love blackberry smoothies, but blackberry seeds are small and hard which can make them unpleasant to eat. The simplest way to deal with blackberry seeds in smoothies is to use a high-speed blender (we love our Vitamix). Blend it on high for a little bit longer than you normally would, and this will pulverize the seeds.

The other way to get rid of them is to use a cheesecloth or strainer, but this can get messy. Place the cheesecloth or strainer over a wide-mouth jar or a small bowl, then carefully pour the blended smoothie over it to remove the seeds. If your smoothie is thick, try pressing it with the back of a spoon to help it pass.
