If you love fish tacos (and who doesn’t?), then make sure to also check out our Baja fish tacos with southern slaw and aji guacamole. We tested several versions of this recipe before landing on our favorite – it’s one we’ve been making for years now. I love them because the recipe is uncomplicated and simple to make. My family loves them because they are flavorful and crispy. What sets them apart is a unique method of seasoning them with flour and spices before battering and frying. With this recipe, you can easily enjoy restaurant-style fried fish tacos from the comfort of your own home.
Fried fish taco recipe ingredients
Making the crispiest fried fish tacos only requires a few ingredients.
Tender fish wrapped up in a deliciously crisp blanket. Sitting on top of a warm corn tortilla. Topped with crunchy lime coleslaw. And the whole deal drizzled generously in smoky chipotle sauce.

Oil for frying: You’ll want to use a high-temperature cooking oil such as avocado, canola, or corn. Flour: Just regular all-purpose flour is what you want to use for this recipe. Spices: garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper provide lots of flavor. Baking soda: Makes the batter light and crispy. Beer: Opt for a light flavored beer, such as a lager. Mexican beers like Corona, Dos Equis, or Modelo work really well. Save the hoppy IPAs for drinking. Fish: White fish is traditional, but I’ve also made this recipe with salmon and it is delicious. A few other ingredients: you’ll also want some chipotle mayo, slaw, and tortillas to finish off the tacos.
What Fish is Best For Tacos?
I like to use cod for these tacos as it’s a firm white fish. Some other good options are halibut, mahi mahi, or haddock. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s not super thin or you’ll have trouble battering and frying it.
Toppings for beer batter fish tacos
Tacos are all about the toppings! While I love the slaw and chipotle mayo suggested in the recipe, you can definitely switch it up. A few other toppings my family loves are:
Guacamole Sour cream Cotija Pickled jalapeños Minced red onion And don’t forget the hot sauce!
Easy Guacamole with tortilla chips Spicy Buffalo Corn on the Cob Corn Salsa Loaded Food Truck Mexican Nacho Fries Creamy Cucumber Salad
Reheating
The best way to reheat fried fish (or anything fried) is in the oven. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, put the leftover fried fish on a baking sheet, and bake it until it is hot and crispy – usually about 10-15 minutes.
